Final Stats

Waltham, Mass. – The road has been unkind to the Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team during the 2005 season. For the second time this season on the road, the Irish rallied to tie a game in regulation and then fall in overtime. This time, Boston College did the honors, as the Eagles handed Notre Dame a 10-9 overtime loss in the BIG EAST opener for the Irish that was played at the Bentley College.

Katherine Wagoner’s unassisted goal just 26 seconds into the first overtime was the lone goal scored in the extra stanza as the Eagles handed the Irish their fourth road loss of the season, dropping Notre Dame to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Boston College improved to 5-1 overall and evened its BIG EAST record at 1-1.

Caitlin McKinney (Fr., Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and Crysti Foote (Jr., Suffern, N.Y.) paced the Irish attack. McKinney scored twice and set up two others while Foote had a goal and three assists in the loss. Junior Mary McGrath (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) was the only other multiple-goal scorer for Notre Dame. Carley St. Lucia (3g, 1a) and Susie Breaznell (3g) led the Eagles in their first-ever win in seven tries versus the Irish.

Boston College scored the first two goals of the game on the way to a 6-2 halftime lead. Breaznell got her first of the afternoon just 2:26 into the game and Elizabeth Kadison made it 2-0 just 1:28 later at 3:54.

Senior tri-captain Lindsay Shaffer (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) cut the lead in half as she broke through for the Irish with 11:02 gone in the opening half. The Eagles would then run off four straight goals with Breaznell and Kadison getting their second of the game and St. Lucia beating Irish goalkeeper Carol Dixon (Sr., Pennsauken, N.J.) twice to build a 6-1 lead with under two minutes left in the half. McGrath closed out the half with an unassisted goal with 1:11 remaining for the 6-2 halftime score.

Notre Dame’s offense came to life off the second-half draw as McGrath made it 6-3 just 44 seconds in when she scored on a free-position shot.

Foote then set up the next three goals to tie the game at 6-6 just 7:47 into the half. McKinney scored twice off Foote setups and Jackie Bowers (Sr., Springfield, Pa.) got the tying goal with 21:13 left on the clock.

From there, the teams traded goals. Lucia made it 7-6 for the Eagles with her third goal of the game. Brittany Fox (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) evened the game at 7-7 at 21:33 only to see Breaznell put Boston College ahead 53 seconds later, 8-7, at the 22:26 mark. Lena Zentgraf (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) tied the score at 8-8 for Notre Dame at the 24:36 mark only to see Courtney Legath give the Eagles a 9-8 lead at 25:54. Foote got the final game-tying goal for Notre Dame with 1:07 left on the clock to send the game to overtime.

The teams traded five shots in the six-minute overtime with only Wagoner’s goal finding the back of the net to give Boston College the overtime victory.

In the game, Boston College had a 27-26 edge in shots on goal. Tara McKennett made 13 saves for the Eagles, with three coming in overtime, including one versus Foote with less than 30 seconds left in the game. Dixon made 12 saves for the Irish with two of those coming in the overtime period.

Notre Dame returns home to start a five-game home stand beginning on Friday, April 1 when the Irish play host to the University of Connecticut in a 7:00 p.m. game. That game is scheduled to be played at Moose Krause Stadium. If weather or field conditions do not permit play outdoors, the game will move inside to the Loftus Sports Center.
