Baltimore, Md. – The combination of the numbers 10 and 9 are a set of numbers that Notre Dame women’s lacrosse coach Tracy Coyne is learning to dread. For the third time this season, Coyne’s women’s lacrosse squad came up on the short end of a 10-9 score, this time falling to 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 10-9, at Homewood Field on Sunday afternoon. The loss was the fourth one-goal loss for the Irish this season.
The Blue Jays rallied from a 9-6 deficit in the final 5:15 of the game, scoring twice in the final 28 seconds to snatch a road win away from the Irish. Sophomore All-American candidate Mary Key, who has scored 46 goals this season, had a hand in three of the four goals, including setting up the tying goal by Kelly Putnam with 28 seconds left on the clock and then scored the game winner via a free-position shot with just three seconds left on the clock.
Key led all scorers with three goals and two assists in the game. Lena Zentgraf (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) led all Irish scorers with three points on two goals and an assist. Caitlin McKinney (Fr., Lafayette Hill, Pa.), Brittany Fox (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) and Mary Carpenter (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) each scored twice for the Irish and Crysti Foote (Jr., Suffern, N.Y.) had Notre Dame’s ninth goal of the day.
The loss, the fourth in a row for the Irish, drops Notre Dame to 3-10 on the year with two games remaining. Johns Hopkins improves to 10-4 on the season.
Johns Hopkins took the early lead in the game when Lauren Schwarzmann scored just 2:36 into the game but that would be the last lead the Blue Jays would have until Key scored the game winner in the final seconds.
The Irish would score the next three goals to build a 3-1 lead. Fox converted a Jackie Bowers (Sr., Springfield, Pa.) pass just 1:01 later for her first goal of the game to tie matters at 1-1. Zentgraf put the Irish ahead less than three minutes later when she took a feed from Foote and beat Blue Jay goalkeeper Lauren Riddick at 6:23. Foote then made it 3-1 at 7:14 with her lone goal of the game.
Kadie Stamper stopped Notre Dame’s three-goal run when she beat Irish goalkeeper Carol Dixon (Sr., Pennsauken, N.J.) at 12:48 of the first half to make it a 4-2 game.
Bowers picked up her second assist of the afternoon when she set up Carpenter’s first goal at the 14:21 mark. Key answered that at 15:33 to cut the lead to 4-3 and Erin Riordan’s goal at 16:58 evened the score at 4-4. McKinney put the Irish back on top at 5-4 on a free-position goal with 9:30 left in the half for the final goal of the opening stanza.
The Notre Dame lead would go to 6-4 in the second half when Zentgraf opened the scoring with her second goal of the day at 5:02. Annie Wagner and Sarah Walsh scored less than four minutes apart at 6:53 and 10:16 to tie the game at 6-6.
From there, it appeared that the Irish would take control as Fox scored at 11:16 from Jess Mikula (Sr., Chester, Md.), Carpenter added an unassisted goal at 13:42 and Zentgraf set up McKinney’s second goal of the day at 18:28 to give Notre Dame a 9-6 lead.
Dixon, who made nine of her career-high 15 saves in the second half, held off the Johns Hopkins attack as the Blue Jays fired 18 of their 33 shots during the final period of play.
After McKinney’s goal, the Irish slowed down the play, running over six minutes off the clock before Key would begin the Johns Hopkins comeback. Her unassisted goal (the second of the game) made it 9-7 with 5:15 left. Schwarzmann scored her second of the game with 3:11 left to make it 9-8.
With 28 seconds left, Key found Kelley Putnam in front and the junior midfielder fired it past Dixon with 28 seconds left. The Blue Jays controlled the final draw and got the ball to Key who drove to the goal and was fouled with three seconds left. She beat Dixon with a free-position shot for the final goal of the afternoon and a 10-9 win for Johns Hopkins.
The Irish return to action on Saturday, April 30 when they travel to Syracuse, N.Y., to face the No. 13 Orangewomen in the final BIG EAST game of the season. Game time is 1:00 p.m. (EDT).
