SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-9, 4-7 ACC) fell to the Miami Hurricanes on Friday, Oct. 27 in Purcell Pavilion in four sets (13-25, 25-21, 27-29, 15-25).
The Irish were led by Sydney Palazzolo with 12 kills, followed by Ava Lange with 11 kills. Charity McDowell chipped in five blocks and Nicole Drewnick dished out 27 assists for the Irish.
Set One
The Hurricanes were able to claim an early 11-5 lead and continued to rally as the Irish worked to close the gap. The Irish were led by Ava Lange with three kills in the first, hitting at an impressive .750 clip, but the Irish would go on to fall 25-13 in set one.
Set Two
The Irish and Hurricanes were back and forth to start the second as the Irish came our strong and were able to post an 11-7 advantage. While Miami tied it up at 13-all, the Irish pulled away again to take the lead at 19-16. The Hurricanes closed the gap to two at 21-19, but with a pair of Palazzolo kills, an ace from Hattie Monson, and errors from Miami, the Irish pulled out set two with a 25-21 win.
Set Three
Tied at 1-1 heading into the third, both squads were looking to take the 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth. Similar to set two, neither team was able to pull away from the other. There were 13 ties and four lead changes in set three. Tied at 23-all, the Irish and Hurricanes swapped points until it was tied yet again at 27-27, but Miami would put away the two final points to take set three 29-27.
Set Four
The Hurricanes carried their momentum into set four as the Irish trailed 8-3 before calling a timeout. Maintaining the advantage at 15-10, Miami started to pull away and as the Irish continued to battle, the Hurricanes would go on to take the final set 25-15.
