NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Notre Dame fell to Virginia Tech by a final score of 1-0 on a chilly, windy afternoon at Alumni Stadium on Monday.
The Hokies scored the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute and were able to keep the Irish attack in check the rest of the way to leave with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish started the match strong during the matinee, controlling play and keeping possession for the majority of the opening 20 minutes. Notre Dame had the best chance of the first half, as McFadden fired a shot just wide in the 18th minute of play. The Hokies then managed to settle in and the two teams went to the half level at 0-0.
The visitors came out on the front foot and scored the game’s only goal in the 52nd minut, as Kyle McDowell’s cross found Jacob Labovitz, whose shot found the back of the net to give Virginia Tech the lead.
The Irish tried to level the match but the Virginia Tech defense held the hosts at bay. In the final seconds of the contest the Irish earned a free kick in the final third but were unable to capitalize, giving the Hokies the win.

On the performance…
“I thought it was a game we started really well and we were a little unfortunate not to get the first goal but after that chance Virginia Tech came to life and closed out the half well. Then we had a bad turnover in midfield to start the second half and that led to them getting a goal.
Credit to Virginia Tech, I thought we threatened their goal but we didn’t create enough good chances in the game. With that, I thought the guys fought to the end and really pushed until the last second of the game. We have to have a short memory because we have a big game against Louisville on Friday.

The Irish wrap up the fall portion of their regular season schedule on Friday, Nov. 6, as they host Louisville at Alumni Stadium. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m. and will air on RSN. The game will air in the South Bend viewing area on Marquee Sports Network.
