NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame baseball team dropped the final game of the series to No. 7 Louisville 8-2 Sunday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium.
After two games where there was not much offense, both teams jumped out on the scoreboard in the early innings. Louisville held a 3-0 lead until Daniel Jung hit a two-run blast in the third to make it a one-run game.
The Cardinals responded in the next inning and tacked on four runs in the fourth to take control of the game and secure the win.
How It Happened
Louisville scored first in the top half of the first inning. After a leadoff double and then a single to put runners on the corners, Logan Wyatt grounded out to the third baseman that scored the run from third. Brown was able to settle down and get out of the inning without giving up any more runs.
The Cardinals continued to tack on a run in the second and third inning to increase their lead to 3-0 but the Irish fought back in the bottom of the third. Niko Kavadas worked a full count walk and Jung stepped to the plate with two away. He lifted the a 2-1 pitch to right and it just cleared the wall for his fourth home run of the season and pulled the Irish within one at 3-2.
Louisville responded in the top of the fourth. The Cardinals sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs in the inning to extend their lead to 7-2.
Louisville added one more run in the fifth and the Irish could not mount a comeback against the Cardinals bullpen.
