FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. — University of Notre Dame men’s tennis seniors Quentin Monaghan and Alex Lawson continued their impressive doubles run this fall, advancing to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Friday at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
In the evening, Monaghan and Lawson continued to harness the momentum that has seen the pair win its last seven doubles matches. The 28th-ranked duo rallied from a second-set loss to No. 23 Diego Hidalgo and Gordon Watson of Florida 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-7 to move into the semifinals.
Monaghan and Lawson will play the winner of the quarterfinal match between North Carolina’s Brett Clark and Robert Kelly and Georgia Gwinnett’s Jordan Cox and Kevin Konfederak.
Monaghan got the day off on the right foot in consolation singles action, defeating Oklahoma’s Alex Ghilea 6-4, 7-5. The fifth-ranked Irish senior cruised to a first-set win, then fought back after going down a break to limit the match to two sets. He will play Indiana’s Sam Monette in the consolation quarterfinal on Saturday.

ATHENS, Ga. — The rest of the Irish kicked off action at the Bulldog Scramble at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Friday, putting a full day with two rounds of singles and a round of doubles in the round robin format.
The Irish went 6-8 in singles play, with freshmen Nathan Griffin and Daniel Rayl each going 2-0 on the day. Griffin defeated Harvard’s Xavier Gonzalez 6-1, 6-3, and Grant Solomon 7-6, 6-7, 7-5. Rayl upended Harvard’s Kelvin Lam 7-6, 2-6, 6-2, and Georgia Tech’s Elijah Melendez 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Junior Eddy Covalschi also picked up a win, defeating Georgia Tech’s Carlos Benito 7-5, 6-4, and senior Kenneth Sabacinski downed Kenny Tao of Harvard, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
In doubles play, Covalschi and sophomore Brendon Kempin picked up the only Irish win of the day over Harvard’s Brian Yeung and Andy Zhou, 6-3.
Play will continue tomorrow with two rounds of doubles and a round of singles.
