Irish Earn Three Victories Against A Talented Field At The Big Ten Invitational

The University of Notre Dame rowing team earned three victories during the first day of competition at the Big Ten Invitational on Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio, on Saturday. The day featured two sessions of racing, with the Irish taking on No. 3 Ohio State, No. 7 Alabama, No. 15 Wisconsin, No. 16 Iowa, No. 17 Minnesota and No. 18 Washington State (Pocock/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association rankings).

The morning session began with a victory by the First Varsity Eight, defeating No. 17 Iowa, Louisville and Michigan State in 6:40.511. The First Varsity Four followed up quickly with its victory over that same group in 7:31.802.

The afternoon session was highlighted by a victory from the Second Varsity Four crossing the finish line first in 7:48.340 ahead of No. 17 Minnesota and Louisville.

“I thought the morning session went very well for us especially for the 1V leading off and winning,” Irish head coach Martin Stone said.

“The 2V showed that it has improved. Then the 4 winning really set us up for a good morning performance. I think we let the conditions get to us in the afternoon and didn’t handle it well. That is part of racing. We let an opportunity slip by in the afternoon but I am still really proud of our effort today. We learned a lot and look forward to another series of great racing on Sunday.”

All the teams faced changing conditions during the day, as the morning race saw smooth surfaces throughout the race course. The weather changed during the day with the starting area staying calm, but a cross wind affected the last 1,000 meters of the race.

The regatta will conclude on Sunday with a single race by each boat, starting with the Varsity Eight against No. 17 Minnesota, Tennessee and Michigan State at 10 a.m. ET.
