CARY, N.C. – Two 21-win teams waged battle in the semifinal round of the ACC Tournament as the third-seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish (21-6) clashed with the second-seeded Virginia Cavaliers (21-3). Unfortunately, No. 24 Notre Dame’s run in the league tourney came to an on Saturday, falling 4-1 to No. 4 Virginia.
Notre Dame threw the first punch claiming the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. No. 62 Llorens Saracho and Nad defeated Dietrich and Santamarta Roig, 6-3. Next, Dominko & Gregg clinched with a 6-3 win over No. 45 Dahlberg & Kim.
Virginia retaliated by claiming the first set in four of the six singles matches. The Cavaliers then rode that wave of momentum into winning all four of those matches by straight sets, defeating the Irish 4-1 to advance to the ACC title game.
No. 75 Perry Gregg was impressive on court two vs. No. 15 Keegan Rice. Gregg won the first set 7-5 and was down just 2-3 in the second set when the match was abandoned.
In addition, yesterday’s hero, Kyran Magimay, was closing in on victory on court five, up 6-4, 5-4 on Stiles Brockett.
Up next, the Irish will await their NCAA Tournament seeding. The Selection Show is scheduled for Monday, April 27, streamed live on NCAA.com at 4 p.m. ET.
