NOTRE DAME, Indiana — The University of Notre Dame baseball team battled No. 13 Florida State for 13 innings before falling 8-3 in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Frank Eck Stadium on Friday night.
The Irish led, 2-0, but surrendered a pair in the seventh. The game remained 2-2 until the 12th, when each team scratched across a run. Florida State then got a three-run bomb from Tyler Daughtry as part of a five-run 13th which won the game.
Daniel Jung had a pair of RBI for the Irish in support of starter Michael Hearne. The southpaw held the Seminoles off the scoreboard over five innings, allowing just four hits and one walk.
Key Innings
Bottom Fifth
The Irish got on the board in the fifth with a lead-off single to left field from Patrick McDonald who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ryan Lidge rocked a single up the middle to score McDonald for the first Irish run of the game.
Bottom Sixth
The Irish continued their momentum into the sixth when Nick Podkul was hit by the Seminole Pitcher and moved over by an intentional walk of Matt Vierling. A wild pitch put Podkul and Vierling on second and third, and a single from Jung brought in the run to increase Notre Dame’s lead.
Top Seventh
Guenther took the mound in the sixth inning after a shut out in the first five by Michael Hearne. A lead-off single from Seminoles’ Busby started off the inning, and the Seminoles loaded the bases with Henderson up to bat with a full count. Guenther got the strikeout, but a wild pitch brought in the first Seminole run on the next at-bat. Notre Dame brought in Peter Solomon after another Seminole run was walked in to tie the game. Solomon drew a fly out to center field to end the inning.
Top Twelfth
Seminoles’ Taylor Walls led off the inning with a single up the middle and was pushed over by a ground out and stolen base. He scored on a wild pitch to give Florida State the lead
Bottom Twelfth
The Irish fought back with a double from Podkul deep into left field. Vierling drove in the tying run with a line drive double down the right field line. An intentional walk of Jung put runners on first and second who were left on base to send the game into a thirteenth inning.
Top Thirteenth
Florida State used the long ball to ice the game away in the 13th. Dylan Busby led off with a double before Rhett Aplin bunted him over to third. Jackson Lueck hit a flyball to left field that was good for a sacrifice fly to score Busby, but was dropped by the right fielder and allowed Lueck to reach second. After JC Flowers singled, Tyler Daughtry delivered the big blow with a three-run homer to right. With two outs and Evy Rubial in on relief of Peter Solomon, Dern walked, then moved to second on a wild pitch before Cal Raleigh singled him home. After another walk, Busby flew out to end the inning with FSU up, 8-3.
