SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (15-2-3, 8-1-1) concluded their season on Thursday night at Alumni in a heartbreaking 0-1 loss in double overtime to Ohio State (10-4-6, 5-2-5).
It was a possession battle in the midfield between both squads to start, but the Irish remained aggressive when they had opportunities. Izzy Engle had a great look in the 9th minute as the ball found the back of the net, but was called back for offsides to keep it a scoreless slate.
It remained scoreless at the half as the Irish outshot the Buckeyes 8-1 in the first half, with no shots on goal from either team.
The Buckeyes had their first shot on goal in the 53rd minute, but a huge save from Sonoma Kasica kept it at an even nil-nil. Ohio State had another look in the 57th minute, but Kasica was there with the save.
Charlie Codd, Ellie Hodsden, and Carolyn Calzada had some looks in the second hlaf, but ultimately were unable to get them across the line.
Both teams battled to the end of regulation, but an even nil-nil score would take us into a golden goal overtime and after another scoreless 10 minutes of play, an eventual second overtime period.
The Irish and Buckeyes continued to battle and just when it looked like it would be going into penalty kicks, Ohio State was able to score on the cross to far post to win on a golden goal with 34 seconds left.
