EVANSTON, Ill. — The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team fell in a hard match to No. 26 Arizona State today in the first round of ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Irish lost to the Sun Devil 4-0 in Evanston, Ill., and will play Oklahoma State in the second day of the event tomorrow.
Despite sophomore Quinn Gleason and senior Britney Sanders’ doubles victory at No. 1 over Leighann Sahagun and Joanna Smith (6-2), the Irish lost the doubles point to Arizona State. Freshman Mary Closs and senior Julie Sabacinski lost at No. 2 doubles to Ebony Panoho and Stephanie Vlad, 6-3, and senior Jennifer Kellner and freshman Jane Fennelly fell to Desirae Krawcyk and Kassidy Jump at No. 3, 7-5.
The Sun Devils picked up their victory with three more wins in singles matches. Sanders fell to Stephanie Vlad (ranked 50th) at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2 and Closs lost at No. 4 to Panaho, 6-4, 6-0. Krawcyk clinched the win for Arizona State in a superset tiebreaker against Quinn Gleason, winning 6-1, 4-6, 1-0.
Notre Dame’s match against Oklahoma State begins tomorrow at 10 a.m.
