NOTRE DAME, Indiana — The Notre Dame Women’s Tennis team opened ACC play with a nail-biting, 4-3 loss at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
For the third consecutive match — and first since a thrilling, 4-3 victory over No. 20 Southern Cal at the USTA’s College MatchDay — the competition was locked in a 3-3 tie headed into the final singles match of the evening.
“Kudos to NC State for playing well tonight,” Coach Silverio said. “It was a fight to the finish and our team continues to compete at a high standard. Even though the final result was not in our favor, we had victories tonight that we will capitalize on going forward.”
How It Happened
Notre Dame was ahead 1-0 after earning the doubles point to open the competition. Recently-named ACC Postgraduate Scholarship recipient Zoe Spence and partner Julia Lilien earned the first doubles victory, a 6-3 win. Cameron Corse and Page Freeman followed suit, coming out victorious in a 7-5 win over the Wolfpack.
In singles play, NC State earned the first three singles victories before the Irish rebounded.
Maeve Koscielski pulled the Irish within one, winning a decisive 6-1, 6-3 match over Liz Norman. Cameron Corse’s victory tied the competition at three apiece with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Alana Smith.
The competition would come down to the finals singles court, where Ally Bojczuk would do battle with Lexi Keberle. With her teammates cheering her on from the sidelines, Bojczuk opened with a 7-6 first-set victory. In the second set, Keberle would claim the win, 7-5. With the match on the line in the third set, Bojczuk quickly fell behind 2-0, but rallied to make it 2-1. She then earned a second win to make it 3-2 and then 4-3, but ultimately fell to Keberle, 6-3.
