SAINT PAUL, Minn. — The Notre Dame hockey team saw its historic 2017-18 campaign come to a close with another one-goal game, but this time it was Minnesota Duluth able to take the decision, capturing the national title with a 2-1 over the Irish in Saint Paul.

The Bulldogs used a pair of first-period goals before holding on for the next two periods. A stout UMD defense held the Irish to 20 shots in the contest. Andrew Oglevie was the goal-scorer for Notre Dame, with Cam Morrison and Jake Evans assisting.

Mike Richter Award winner Cale Morris was outstanding, making 33 saves to keep the Irish in it until the end. Duluth’s Hunter Shepard made 19 saves, allowing the one power play goal. Notre Dame was 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Irish killed all three Bulldog power plays.

It capped a remarkable season for Notre Dame, including a 16-game winning streak and capturing both the Big Ten regular season and tournament championships during the inaugural season in the league.

The Irish advanced to the Frozen Four for the fourth time in school history and second consecutive year. Since Notre Dame’s first Frozen Four trip in 2008, only North Dakota and Boston College have reached the national semifinals more often (five each). It was the second appearance in the final for the Irish, who fell to Boston College in 2008.

NOTRE DAME GOAL DESCRIPTION

2-1 | The Irish cut the deficit in half at 7:40 of the second period when a tic-tac-toe passing sequence from Jake Evans and Came Morrison was finished off in front by Andrew Oglevie for his 15th goal of the season and second of the Frozen Four. It was Oglevie’s team-best ninth power-play goal of the season, while it was Evans’ team-high 46th point of the season (13-32-46).
