BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Irish suffered a tough 2-1 road defeat in overtime against No. 12 Virginia Tech, marking Notre Dame’s first loss in ACC play this season.
Notre Dame’s Philip Quinton scored the first goal of his career from the spot in the second half for the lone Irish score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither the Irish nor Hokies managed to score in the opening 45 minutes of play, as the match was scoreless at the half. Notre Dame outshot Virginia Tech 7-2 in the first half.
The Hokies managed to score the opener in the 53rd minute off a shot from Jacob Labovitz. Less than 30 seconds later Notre Dame’s Daniel Russo was brought down in the box and Philip Quinton calmly finished into the bottom corner of the net to level the match at 1-1.
Both teams pushed for the winner but were unable to break the deadlock, sending the match to overtime.
Notre Dame nearly won it in the first minute of overtime, as Jack Lynn chipped the on-rushing keeper but a Virginia Tech player recovered to clear the ball before it found the back of the net.
Unfortunately for the Irish, the Hokies’ Danny Flores produced the winner in the 99th minute to escape with the win.
