NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Nothing seemed to go right for the young Irish Friday night against former BIG EAST rival and current Atlantic Coast Conference foe Boston College, as the Eagles swept the University of Notre Dame volleyball team, 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-17), in front of 1,293 fans at Purcell Pavilion.
The Irish (5-10, 0-3 ACC) struggled from the get go in all aspects of the match, as they hit -.045 in a tough first set. BC had four service aces and five blocks in a frame that it led from beginning to end.
Notre Dame turned in its best set of the night in the second, taking an early 5-2 lead and holding a lead as late as 8-7. Later in the set the Eagles held a slim 13-12 lead, but turned it into an 18-12 advantage in the blink of an eye. The Irish didn’t give up, however, trimming the margin to two at 18-16 before BC pulled away.
Boston College (9-6, 1-2 ACC) finished off the victory in the third set by hitting .324 and taking advantage of several Irish miscues that included three ball-handling errors, three service errors and three blocking errors.
Usually an outstanding serving team, Notre Dame finished with a season-low one ace to go along with seven service errors. The Irish totaled just 24 assists and 32 digs and hit .114 for the evening (26K, 16E, 88A).
The match featured just four ties and two lead changes.
Preseason all-ACC selection Sam Fry continued to pace the Irish, as she reached double digits in kills for the ninth time in 15 matches this year. She had 10 to go along with three blocks and the team’s one service ace.
Sol Calvete led BC with 14 kills, eight digs and two service aces, while Katty Workman posted 11 kills, six digs and four blocks. Setter Mallori Moffat had an outstanding match with 32 kills, four digs, three blocks and two kills (.400 A%).
