NOTRE DAME, Indiana – The Notre Dame women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Iowa on Saturday afternoon at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
The defeat dropped the Irish to 6-4 on the spring season, while Iowa improved to 7-3. The Irish are back in action on Sunday against Purdue before a nine-day layoff.
How It Happened
Doubles
The teams split doubles matches on courts two and three to get things started. Elise van Heuvelen and Anastasia Reimchen defeated Cameron Corse and Zoe Spence, 6-2, on court two, before the Irish rebounded with a 6-4 win on court three by Rachel Chong and Bess Waldram over Iowa’s Montana Crawford and Adorable Huckleby.
At that point, court one doubles was tied 4-4, but Iowa’s Zoe Douglas and Yufei Long took consecutive games, to take a 6-4 victory over Brooke Broda and Allison Miller, clinching the doubles point for the Hawkeyes.
Singles
Zoe Spence quickly got the Irish their first point of the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Anastasia Reimchen on court four. Iowa retook the lead on court three, where Zoe Douglas defeated Cameron Corse, 6-2, 6-3.
Iowa recorded its third point at five singles, where Adorabol Huckleby defeated Rachel Chong, 6-1, 7-5. The Irish responded on court six, as Ally Bojczuk scored a 6-2, 7-5 win to cut Iowa’s team lead to 3-2.
All eyes turned to courts one and two. On court one, Iowa’s Yufei Long battled back after losing the first set, to take the second two frames and clinch the match with a win over Brooke Broda (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).
After Allison Miller and Elise van Heuvelen split the first two sets by identical 7-6 scores, van Heuvelen took a tiebreak played in lieu of a third set, 10-5.
