CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Notre Dame baseball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Miami on Friday night at Alex Rodriguez Park.
Notre Dame (6-5) was shut out for the first time this season against a Miami (6-7) pitching staff that held the Irish to just five hits.
How It Happened
Miami opened the scoring in the second inning, knocking a single and back-to-back doubles to left field to bring home two runs and take an early 2-0 lead.
Scott Tully worked 4.1 innings and allowed two runs while striking out two batters. The southpaw was relieved by Anthony Holubecki, who collected two strikeouts to close the fifth inning.
Zach Martin entered the game midway through the seventh inning and hit back-to-back batters. Martin walked the next Miami batter before handing it over to Andrew Belcik, who allowed one run to score on a wild pitch. The Hurricanes took a 3-0 lead into the eighth inning.
Miami’s Jeb Bargfeldt worked 7.2 innings and recorded five strikeouts, shutting out an Irish offense that has been one of the program’s best in the last 15 years.
Game Notes
- Notre Dame owns a record of 6-19 all-time against the Hurricanes, including a 5-13 record on the road.
- Notre Dame is 2-2 in true road games this season.
- Jake Johnson owns an 18-game on-base streak, dating back to last season.
- Podkul has reached base safely in 16 straight games, dating back to 2017. The second baseman has hit .403 (27-67) with seven doubles, two triples and 17 RBI during that span.
- David LaManna has reached base safely in all 11 games in 2018 and has recorded a hit in 10 of 11 games.
Games two and three of the series at Miami will occur as part of a doubleheader at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday. Both games will be streamed on ACC Network Extra/WatchESPN. Fans can tune in to 103.1 FM (South Bend) or WatchND for the radio broadcast.
