Irish Fall To Michigan, Wisconsin In Season Opener

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame officially opened the 2025-26 swimming and diving season on Friday, as the Irish played host to Michigan and Wisconsin at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. On the men’s side, the No. 25 Irish fell 117-183 to the No. 10 Wolverines and 143-155 to the No. 22 Badgers. The women fell 82-218 to 10th-ranked Michigan and 105.5-194.5 to 15th-ranked Wisconsin.

Notre Dame won six events, four on the men’s side and two on the women’s side.

The men started off the meet narrowly missing the victory in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Tommy Janton, Jack Armour, Dillon Edge and Shane Eckler posted a time of 1:27.43 to take second place, 0.03 off the top time.

From there, Irish record holder and U.S. National Team member Janton won the 100 back with a time of 47.24, and sophomore Eckler touched first in the 100 free with a time of 43.84. Eckler took second in the 50 free (19.91) with freshman Min-Gyo Jang following behind for third (20.41).

Seniors Daniel Knapp and Ben Nguyen won the diving events for the Irish, as Knapp’s 1-meter score of 324.25 earned the top spot, and Nguyen’s 369.00 in the 3-meter took home the win. Freshman diver Matthew Wong had a promising debut with a second-place finish in the 1-meter as well (313.70).

On the women’s side, diver Grace Courtney won both the 1-meter (291.40) and 3-meter (298.25), and Calie Brady notched second in both of those events (274.25/284.80).

Sophomore Carli Cronk took sixth in the 200 free (1:49.60) and fifth the in 200 fly (2:01.41).

As far as newcomers go, freshman Emily Hamill finished sixth in the 100 back (55.49) and second in the 200 back (1:59.27). Fellow rookies Kate Simon and Becky Rentz placed fourth and fifth in the 50 free, respectively (23.36/23.44).

Notre Dame will be back at the Rolfs Aquatic Center on Oct. 24, as the Irish host regional foe Northwestern for a dual meet at 3:30 p.m.
