Pittsburgh, Penn. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish fell to No. 8 Pitt on the road in three sets (25-10, 25-15, 25-18) on Friday, Oct. 21. The Irish were led by Lucy Trump and Paris Thompson who each tallied six kills apiece.
Set One
The Irish and Panthers played a close set to start the first, but after being tied at 4-4, Pitt was able to pull away. The Panthers took the lead 12-5, but a 4-0 run from the Irish brought it within three at 12-9. The Panthers responded with an 8-0 run and went on to take set one 25-10.
Set Two
The Panthers posted an early 8-2 lead, but a run sparked by a Lucy Trump kill allowed the Irish to close the gap at 11-7. The Panthers extended their lead to 16-7, but kills from Lauren Tarnoff and Paris Thompson helped close the gap to six at 17-11. Notre Dame continued to battle in set two, but the Panther offense allowed Pitt to take home set two 25-15.
Set Three
Notre Dame was in the fight to start set three as the Irish trailed by just one at 7-6. While Pitt extended their lead to 12-6, the Irish closed the gap to make it a three point set. A kill from Winkler and an ace from Maisie Alexander kept the Irish within three at 14-11, but the Panthers began to pull away and take the lead 21-15 and went on to take the final set 25-18.
