Piscataway, N.J. – Syracuse senior midfielder Christina Dove scored her third goal of the game with 2:02 left in the fourth overtime to give the Orange a 12-11 win over Notre Dame in the BIG EAST semifinals at Rutgers’ Yurcak Field on Thursday night.
The goal capped an exciting well, played game that lasted 72:58, the longest game in the history of the Irish program and the longest game ever played in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Notre Dame was led offensively by senior attack Gina Scioscia who scored four goals in the first half and added an assist for a five-point night. Junior midfielder Shaylyn Blaney added four goals while Megan Sullivan scored a pair and Kailene Abt added a single goal in the loss.
Syracuse was led by Halley Quillinan with four goals to go with Dove’s three-goal game. Tegan Brown scored a pair with Tee Ladouceur, Jackie DePetris and Michelle Tumulo had one goal each.
The overtime game was the fourth of the season for the Irish who are now 2-2 in extra time. The one-goal loss was the eighth game of the year for Notre Dame to be decided by one goal and the Irish are 5-3 in those contests. Notre Dame had played in the previous longest game in BIG EAST history when the Irish lost to Georgetown, 15-14, in three overtimes (71:14) in the 2008 Tournament.
The loss drops the Irish to 11-6 on the season and they will now wait to see if they have done enough to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The bids come out on Sunday night at 10 p.m. Syracuse improves to 13-5 on the year and will play Georgetown on Saturday in the BIG EAST Championship game at 1:00 p.m. The Hoyas defeated Loyola, 11-9, earlier in the day.
The Irish offense took awhile to untracked as they were held off the scoreboard until the 8:48 of the first half, getting just one shot until that point while the Orange were building a 4-0 lead.
Tumulo opened the scoring with 26:08 left in the first half and that would be the last goal for the next 11 minutes as freshman goaltender Ellie Hilling, who equaled a career high with 12 saves, held Syracuse off the board.
Dove scored her first of the game with 15:41 left and Ladouceur scored her only goal at 14:25 to make it 3-0. DePetris made it 4-0 with 9:59 and at that point Tracy Coyne called a time out.
That seemed to do the trick as the Irish scored their first goal of the game on their second shot of the night as Scioscia set up Sullivan for her first goal of the game at 8:48. That started Notre Dame on a run of seven of the next eight goals.
Scioscia would get her first two goals of the half 43 seconds apart converting a Jenny Granger assist at 8:12 and an assist from Maggie Tamasitis (first of three) at 7:29 to cut the lead to 4-3.
Dove interrupted the run with her second goal of the night with 7:17 left. Notre Dame then ran off the final four goals of the half over the final 6:19.
Scioscia’s third goal at 6:19 made it 5-4 and Blaney tied the game with her first goal just 16 seconds later at 6:03 to tie the game, 5-5.
It appeared that Syracuse had retaken the lead with 4:48 left in the half as Dove scored on a free-position shot. Following the goal, an official’s stick check proved that Dove had used an illegal stick and the goal was waved off.
The Irish took advantage of the disallowed goal by scoring a pair of free-position goals with Blaney scoring at 2:27 and Scioscia with just one second left in the half for a 7-5 halftime lead.
Syracuse got back in the game by scoring three of the first four goals of the second half. Brown and Abt traded goals at 24:27 and 16:28 to make it 8-6.
Quillinan scored her first two goals of the night at 14:22 and 12:08 to tie the score at 8-8. The defenses took over from there, as no goals would be scored until the 4:02 mark of the game.
Brown put the Orange back in front, 9-8, with 4:02 left in the game with her second goal of the contest. Blaney’s third goal of the night tied the score just 36 seconds later at 3:26.
Notre Dame looked like it had the game winner when Tamasitis set Sullivan up in front and she bounced a shot past Hogan with 27 seconds left to make it 10-9. Quillinan answered that with her third goal with 12 seconds left to send the game to overtime at 10-10.
In the first overtime, the teams traded goals with Blaney scoring at 4:32 and Quillinan tying the score at 11-11 with 23 seconds left.
The teams would play two sudden-victory overtime periods (six minutes) before the game was decided by Dove with the game winner just 58 seconds into the fourth overtime.
Syracuse out shot Notre Dame in the game by a 32-18 margin. Hogan finished with just four saves in the game as the Irish put 15 of their 18 shots on goal.
