Irish Fencing Impresses at Northwestern Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Fighting Irish fencing team had another successful weekend, competing at the Schiller Duals hosted by Northwestern. The men’s side went undefeated with a record of 5-0 while the women finished 4-1. The women are now 33-1 on the year and the men improve their record to 31-2.

Nick Candela paced the men’s squad with 10 wins in epee over the course of the competition while Rodrigo Fernandez went 8-1 in sabre. Matt Chan (sabre), Kevin Bae (foil) and Dominic Joseph (foil) each went a perfect 6-0 at the invite.

Atara Greenbaum impressed for the Notre Dame women, posting a flawless record of 12-0 in sabre. Foil teammates Emma Griffin and Ryanne Leslie each recorded 10 wins on the day.

The men dominated their five matchups, defeating Air Force (21-6), Wayne State (21-6), No. 15 UC San Diego (17-10), Incarnate Word (23-4) and Lawrence (20-7).

The women picked up four wins, including two against ranked opponents. The Fighting Irish defeated No. 11 Temple (14-13), No. 5 Northwestern (20-7), UC San Diego (18-9) and Incarnate Word (20-7). The women’s team suffered their first an only defeat of the season, dropping a 16-11 decision to No. 8 Cornell.

The Irish are back in action next weekend, as the women compete at the Beguinet Classic hosted by Duke in Durham, North Carolina, on Saturday, Feb. 8 while the men will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take part in the Miller Invitational hosted by UNC on Sunday, Feb. 9.
