Irish Finish Strong at DeCicco Duals

NOTRE DAME, In. – The Fighting Irish wrap up their weekend after hosting the DeCicco Duals with visiting teams from Northwestern, Denison, Florida, Wayne State, Detroit Mercy, Lawrence, Cleveland State, Long Island University (LIU), Indiana, Purdue, and Case Western.

The men’s team moves to 32-0 on the season and the women’s team is now 37-2 overall.

DAY 1 

On day one, the Irish came out strong with the men going undefeated on the day. In a dominating fashion, they beat Denison 25-2, Florida 24-3, Wayne State 23-4, Detroit Mercy 26-1, Lawrence 21-6, and Cleveland State 17-10. 

The men’s epee squad saw 12 perfect bouts from Austin Guo, Michael Siroky, Sebastian Wozniak, Stephen Ewart, and Nick Itkin. Guo finished day one with a 13-2 record along with teammate Sirkoky finishing 10-2.

The men’s foil team had much of the same with seven 3-0 bouts from William Chen, George Bivins, Gustavo Rosselló, Guram Lortkipanidze, and Joshua Zhang. Chen led the way for the foil squad as he collected a 12-4 record on the day.

The sabre squad wrapped up the day for the Irish with impressive performances collecting 12 more 3-0 bouts from Nicholas Dinu, Nat Landau, Mark Leung, and Luke Linder. Dinu and Landau went 16-1 and 16-2 on the day, respectively.

The women’s squad saw five wins on the day, taking down Denison 27-0, Florida 27-0, Wagner 21-6, Waynes State 23-4, Detroit Mercy 27-0, LIU 24-3, Lawrence 22-5, and Cleveland State 24-3. The squad ultimately fell to #6 Northwestern 10-17.

The women’s side saw more standout performances from the epee squad with Erika Cucala going 20-1 on the day and six perfect bouts. Overall, the epee squad had 16 perfect bouts from Cucala, Anne Myler, and Victoria Tontcheva. All three ended day one with winning records of 19-2 for Myler and 16-5 for Tontcheva.

Women’s foil was competitive with seven team members making the score sheet. Zoe Barnette, Tianji Lukins, Julia McKenna, and Mayah Walker all fenced in five or more matches. The squad saw 8 perfect 3-0 bouts. Barnette and Walker both went 13-1 on the day. 

Sabre had 14 more impressive performances with 3-0 bouts. Emily Chang went 9-0 on the day when she went 3-0 against Florida, Wayne State, and LIU. Simran Moolchandaney also had a great day going 11-1 overall taking wins over Denison, Wagner, Wayne State and LIU. Cate Priestley and Sienna Wilson collected dominating wins over Denison, Florida, Wayne State, Detroit Mercy, LIU, and Northwestern. Priestly took home an overall record on the day of 10-2 while Wilson collected a 14-1 record. 

DAY 2

Day two of the DeCicco Duals was much of the same success when both the men’s and women’s squad went undefeated. The men’s and women’s teams took down Purdue (23-4 & 26-1), Indiana (27-0 & 27-0), Michigan State (21-6 & 23-4), Michigan (15-12 & 20-7), and Case Western (24-3 & 27-0).

In men’s epee, Austin Guo continued his weekend success going 3-0 across all four of his matches. He finished the day going 12-0 and 25-2 overall this weekend. The squad went 36-9 overall on the day. There were 10 perfect 3-0 bouts from the epee team on the men’s side. The perfect bouts came from Guo, Sebastian Wozniak, Malcolm Fields, and William Chen.

Men’s foil totaled 30 wins on the day going 30-15 for the day. The foil squad had shared success on day two of the duals when nine members of the squad participated throughout the day. Philip Dority, Mark Leung, and Gustavo Rosselló all had 3-0 perfect bouts among the nine team members that ended the day with a win against five opponents.

The sabre squad saw success again on day two of the duals when Nat Landau went 15-0 on the day. Joshua Zhang also had a perfect record when he recorded 12 wins. Marcello Olivares had a great day when he collected a 11-1 record. 

The women’s squad continued the dominating fashion from day one when the epee squad had Erika Cucala go 13-0 on the day. Anne Myler also had a successful day going 9-3 with wins over three of her opponents. The epee squad finished the day with a 40-5 record. 

The foil team had dominating performances from Zoe Barnette, Julia McKenna, and Mayah Walker. They all finished the day with winning records going 10-2, 10-2, and 11-1, respectively. Foil finished their day with a 40-5 record.

Sabre had six team members share in the success when they collected a 43-2 record. Emily Chang went 8-1 on the day. Simran Moolchandaney and Yiyi Andrea Niu both collected perfect records going 11-0 and 10-0, respectively. 

The Notre Dame fencing squad returns to action next weekend on Saturday February 5, when they travel to Evanston, Illinois for the Northwestern Duals.
