East Lansing, Mich. – The women’s golf team came in third at the Mary Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State, after combining to shoot a plus-seven 295 in the final round of play. The team shot a plus-29 for the tournament, two strokes behind co-Champions Michigan State and Kent State, to place third in the 12 team field at the par-72, 6,236 yard Forest Akers West Golf Club.
In the final round, the Irish were led by junior Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) and freshman Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton HS), who each shot a minus-one 71 on the final day. For the tournament, Huffer led the Irish as she carded a plus-eight 224. Her 71 on Sunday marked her first under-par round at the collegiate level, helping her to a 10-place finish. Brophy finished at plus-nine (225), good for a three-way tie in 11th-place.
Tying Brophy in 11th-place with plus-nine totals was sophomore So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) and senior Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute). Park shot a plus-11 in the final round, which did not score for the Irish. Maunu finished the third round with a plus-three 75, the third-best round of the day for Notre Dame.
Junior Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep) carded a plus-six 78 in the final round, completing Notre Dame’s scoring on the day. She finished at plus-19, which put her in a tie for 36th-place.
Sophomore Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) entered the tournament as an independent, thus excluding her from being entered into the Irish team score. She finished in a tie for 22nd-place on the individual leaderboard with a plus-16 mark, shooting a plus-nine 81 in the third round.
The Irish are back in action on September 29 and 30 as they travel to Boulder, Colo. to take part in the University of Colorado’s Heather Farr Memorial. The tournament will take place at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club.
