Tampa, Fla. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team shot a final round score of 297 at the Snowbird Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Irish shot 612 (315-297) for the tournament to finish tied for third place with the University of Toledo (307-305-612) at the tournament hosted by Northern Illinois University. Notre Dame finished 21 strokes behind tournament winner James Madison University. The Dukes won the tournament by firing rounds of 295 and 296 for a total of 15-over par 591. The tournament was played at the par 72, 5,940-yard Pebblecreek Golf Course.
James Madison won by 18 strokes over Southern Mississippi, which finished second in the 21-team tournament with a 609 (307-302). Southern Illinois shot a 620 (315-305) to finish in fifth place, eight strokes behind Notre Dame and Toledo.
The Irish were led by senior Terri Taibl (Elm Grove, Wis.) who shot a five-over par 149 to finish tied for fourth place. The Irish captain fired a career-best 74 in the second round, eclipsing her prior best round score of 75 shot in the first round yesterday. Taibl finished four strokes behind tournament co-winners Carol Green (71-74) and Jessica Lewis (72-73) of James Madison as the two Dukes finished with scores of one-over par 145.
Brena Quaranto of Southern Mississippi finished behind Green and Lewis in second place. Quaranto shot a two-under par 70 in the final round to finish with a 148 (78-70). One stroke behind Quaranto, James Madison’s Jayme Langord (75-74-149) and Southern Illinois’ Megan Tarrolly (76-73-149) joined Taibl in fourth.
Following Taibl for the Irish were freshman Lauren Gebauer (Columbus, Ohio) and Sarah Bassett (Spokane, Wash.) as both shot 152 for the tournament to finish tied for seventh place. Gebauer shot an opening round of 77 and a final-round score of three-over par 75. Bassett shot rounds of 78 and 74 playing as an individual entrant.
After Gebauer and Bassett, Shannon Byrne (Arlington Heights, Ill.), who also played as individual entrant, finished in a tie for 12th after shooting 153 (78-75) in the two-day tournament.
Three strokes behind Byrne for the Irish was Katie Brophy (Fr., Spokane, Wash.), the individual winner of the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational on Tuesday. After shooting an 82 on Thursday, Brophy fired a final-round 74 to finish with a score of 156.
Next for the Irish came two members of the scoring-five, Karen Lotta (So., Los Angeles, Calif.) and Suzie Hayes (Fr., Dublin, Ireland). Lotta followed an opening-round 84 with a final-round score of 74 to finish with a 158. Hayes finished one behind Lotta with a 159 (81-78).
Notre Dame had two other individual entrants in the field of 122. Lauren Barbir (Fr., Montgomery, Texas) shot a 162 (82-80) and Rebecca Rogers (Jr., Alpharetta, Ga.) closed out the group of nine Irish golfers with a 167, shooting a four-over par 76 on Friday after an opening-round score of 91.
Notre Dame is next in action March 23-25 at the Baylor University Tapito Springs Shoot-Out. The tournament will be played at the Tapito Springs Golf Resort in Boerne, Texas.
