Irish Go Undefeated at DeCicco Duals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Following a brief pause due to COVID-19 protocols, the Notre Dame fencing team returned to the strip Saturday to host the annual DeCicco Duals from the Castellan Family Fencing Center. Both the men’s and women’s squad finished the day undefeated after fencing against Ohio State, Lawrence and Northwestern.

The women’s foil squad was top notch throughout the day, finishing with a 30-6 record. Epeeist Kaylin Hsieh led the women with a team-high 12 wins and finished the day undefeated. Amita Berthier (9-0) and Solène Watson (6-0) joined Hsieh with perfect records for the meet.

The men’s foil squad also led the day for the Irish, tallying a 29-7 through the four matches. Freshman Jack Woods led the men with a team-high 10 wins and finished the day 10-1. Ariel Simmons (6-0), Philip Dority and Hans Yoong (3-0) recorded undefeated marks for the Irish on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

 

The Irish women got off to a fast start Saturday afternoon with a strong 20-7 win over Ohio State. The foil squad went a perfect 9-0 against the Buckeyes with 3-0 marks from Berthier, Watson and Isabelle Elizondo. Reghan Ward and Hsieh also tallied 3-0 records in the first match of the day.

The men had a tight battle with the Buckeyes but prevailed 14-13. The match came down to the final bout as Ariel Simmons won to finish 3-0 and give the Irish the clinching point. Woods also went 3-0 against Ohio State.

The women kept the momentum going with a 19-8 win over Northwestern in the second match of the afternoon. Foil was strong once again, with an 8-1 record against the Wildcats. Berthier, Watson and Hsieh all went 3-0 for the second-straight match.

The men took down Lawrence by a score of 22-5 in their second match of the day. Foil pitched a perfect 9-0 record as five Irish ended up with a 3-0 record including Joseph Marino, Valentin Matveev, Woods, Joshua Zhang and Dority.

The women finished off Ohio State for the third win of the meet by a score of 20-7. Hsieh once again pitched a perfect 3-0 record as she was joined by Berthier and Atara Greenbaum.

The men once again had a flair for the dramatic against the Buckeyes, winning the match on the final bout in a 14-13 decision. The Irish roared back from an 8-12 deficit to tie it going into the final epee bout. Matveev won his bout in overtime to give the Irish their third win of the day.

The women and men both finished their final matches decisively with the women beating Northwestern 19-8 and the men finishing off Lawrence 25-2.

UP NEXT

The Irish will get ready for their final regular season meet of the season as they are home again next weekend. Notre Dame will welcome Lawrence and Wayne State to the Castellan Family Fencing Center for a tri-dual meet on Saturday, March 13. The Irish will fence both squads twice throughout the day. There will be no spectators allowed at the meet.
