Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame hockey coach Jeff Jackson will be the guest celebrity at HeartReach Michiana’s annual Golf Fundraiser to be held on Monday, May 23 at Knollwood Country Club in Granger, Ind.
The event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. and openings still remain. Jackson will be on hand to greet tournament participants and sign autographs at registration and will speak at the evening meal following the event.
Jackson, who was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s (CCHA) coach of the year for the 2010-11 season led the Notre Dame hockey team to the NCAA Frozen Four for the second time in the last three seasons as the Irish advanced to St. Paul, Minn., where they fell to eventual champion Minnesota-Duluth in the semifinals.
Notre Dame finished the season with a 25-14-5 overall record and was second in the CCHA. In his six seasons behind the Irish bench, Jackson’s teams are 141-79-27, have won two CCHA regular-season and tournament championships, advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times and have been in two NCAA Frozen Fours.
HeartReach Michiana began in 2004 when Dr. Walter Halloran and friends decided to form the organization whose mission is to serve the Michiana Community, particularly those affected by heart disease, through education, financial support and direct assistance.
The annual fundraiser would be a golf outing where they would raise funds through sponsorship and a live/silent auction. An educational workshop was added to the morning fundraiser to benefit local nurses and physicians needing to get continuing education credits.
Education is provided through the CPR/AED Training Day as well as the Educational workshop the morning of the golf outing. Plans are to also develop a program geared towards local youth to educate them as to the risks of smoking.
Financial Support is given to programs in the Michiana area that address heart disease prevention, stroke awareness, smoking cessation and healthy lifestyles.
Direct assistance includes supporting local schools, churches and community organizations by purchasing and placing automated external defibrillators at their facilities.
This is the seventh year that HeartReach Michiana has held this golf outing with over $340,000 raised with the net proceeds going back into the community.
