NOTRE DAME, Ind – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team put forth an impressive showing Friday as the main singles and doubles draws commenced at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, which the Irish are hosting at the Eck Tennis Pavilion and Lakeland Athletic Club (Niles, Michigan).
Top-seeded Quentin Monaghan breezed through his first-round matchup, dispatching Northwestern’s Jason Seidman 6-4, 6-4. Junior Eddy Covalschi battled to defeat Valparaiso’s Charlie Ernhardt, 5-7, 7-6(4), 7-6(6), while senior Alex Lawson and freshman Grayson Broadus battled back from first-set losses to cruise to victory in the final two sets. Lawson defeated Northwestern’s Mihir Kumar 6-7(3), 6-0, 6-2, while Broadus handled Wisconsin’s Lamar Remy by a similar 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-2 score.
Four of the five Irish doubles entries remained alive after one round of play. Second-seeded and 28th-ranked Lawson and Monaghan received a first-round bye, while three more pairs notched wins in the Round of 32. Fifteenth-seeed Covalschi and Kenneth Sabacinski defeated DePaul’s Tim Corwin and Ivan Divkovic 8-4; 22nd-seeded Nicolas Montoya and Eric Schnurrenberger beat Cleveland State’s Kevin Goth and Ben Slade 8-6; and Broadus and Brendon Kempin upended Cleveland State’s William Malm and Mirko Radosevic 8-6.
Play will continue Saturday with two more rounds of singles beginning at 9 a.m. ET, followed by doubles.
