The women’s golf team opened the 2008-09 season at the Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C.at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club. In the first round of play, the Irish posted a plus-nine team score of 297 at the par 72, 6,159-yard course. With the plus-nine, the Irish enter the second round tied for eighth place. Notre Dame was lead by senior Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute) and freshman Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton HS), both of whom carded a one-over 73.
With their one-over par rounds, Maunu and Huffer, who each had three birdies on the day along with teammate Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep), are tied for 16th place on the individual leader board. They trail co-leaders Mallory Hetzel of Georgia and Whitney Neuhauser of Virginia by five strokes. As a team, the Irish trail co-leaders Virginia and Georgia by nine strokes.
Notre Dame’s other scoring members were juniors Brophy and Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep). Brophy shot a plus-three 75, tied for 39th. Wetzel shot a plus-four 76, putting her in a tie for 53rd. Rounding out the Irish contingent was sophomore So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) who carded a plus-eight 80.
Monday’s second round will begin with 7:40 a.m. (ET) tee times.
