GLENVIEW, Ill. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team shot an opening day 589 (+13) to stand in sixth place (out of 15 teams) through two rounds of play at Northwestern’s Windy City Collegiate. The tournament, which will conclude tomorrow, October 6, is being played at The Glen Club. Senior Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) and sophomore Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton) are each in the top-10, with Brophy tied for third and Huffer tied for 9th.
Brophy fired an opening round three-under par 69. Her round included four birdies (including three consecutive on holes 14, 15 and 16). Brophy’s round tied for the third best single round score in Irish women’s golf history and bested her previous low round as a member of the Irish (a minus-two 70 in the second round of the Lady Northern Invitational in the fall of ’08). She followed up with a one-over par 73 in the afternoon to finish day one at 142 (-2) and earn a share of third place.
Sophomore Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton) carded a two-over par 74 on her opening 18-holes, including birdies on two par three’s. She then caught fire on the final nine holes of her second round (holes 17,18 & 1-7 based on her shotgun start at hole 8) to card a minus-two 70. She played those final nine holes at a minus-three clip to secure her lowest single round total as a member of the Fighting Irish.
Junior Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) finished the morning session with a three-over par 75 to get her tournament started. She secured a birdie on the par-five fifth hole. She then shot a five-over par 77 in the afternoon. As was the case with Brophy and Huffer, both of Conway’s rounds were counted towards Notre Dame’s team score.
Senior Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head (SC) Prep School) matched Huffer in the morning session, recording her own two-over par 74. She notched three birdies, including two at the par five fifth and 14th holes. In second round action, Wetzel turned in a six-over par 78. Through two rounds, she is tied with Conway for 43rd (+8/152).
Junior So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton (FL) Prep) rounded out the morning session for the Irish by carding a nine-over par 81. She followed up with a 77 in the afternoon, which counted towards Notre Dame’s team score. With a two-round total of 158 (+14), she is tied for 69th.
Top-ranked Purdue leads the field by 18 strokes with a 12-under par mark (564), while Boilmaker Maude-Aimee LeBlanc is atop the individual leaderbaord with a seven-under par (137) mark. The Irish find themselves just seven strokes out of second place, currently held by Arizon (+6/582)
