RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Notre Dame fencing team kicked off the season last weekend with individual competition at the USA Fencing 2015 October North American Cup at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
Jonah Shainberg snared gold in Division I men’s sabre on Friday to kick off the weekend for the Irish, while freshman Sabrina Massialas picked up silver and senior Nicole McKee grabbed bronze in Division I women’s foil to wrap the weekend on Sunday.
Irish graduates Gerek Meinhardt and Kelley Hurley also impressed on the weekend, with Meinhardt – who is pursuing his MBA in the Mendoza College of Business – taking first in Division I men’s foil and Hurley capturing third in Division I women’s epee.
The Irish will take part in their first collegiate competition of the season at the Penn State Open on November 8 in State College, Pennsylvania.
