Oct. 24, 2013

Orlando, Fla. — Notre Dame started off strong today in the first rounds of the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational, hosted by Florida State University. Three of the four sophomores who made the trip down to Orlando, Fla., will move into the second round of 32.

Sophomore Quentin Monaghan, the eighth seed in the tournament, defeated Deiton Baughman (USTA), 6-3, 6-2. Tomorrow he will face Blake Davis of FSU at 8:00 a.m.

Sophomore Kenneth Sabacinski took down a 9-16 seed, Jarryd Chaplin of the University of Texas, 6-3, 6-1. Sabacinski has made a habit of taking down highly seeded players in the past few weeks, as he defeated the No. 1 seed in the qualifying draw and the sixth seed in the main draw of the Midwest Regional Championships. He will go head to head with FSU’s Grayson Goldin tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

Sophomore Nicolas Montoya already beat an FSU player this morning, Jack Haffrey, in a three-set match, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. He faces the third-seeded Daniel Leitner tomorrow at 8:00 a.m.

Sophomore Eric Schnurrenberger fell to Tom Fawcett (USTA) in three sets, 6-6, 6-4, 6-4. He will play in the consolation round tomorrow against Jose Sangroinz of UCF at 11:00 a.m.

On the doubles side of the tournament, Schnurrenberger and Monaghan fell to Redlicki and Baughman (USTA), 8-3. Sabacinski and Montoya, however, took down the 5-8 seed Rakitt and Fiegel of Georgia Tech, 8-6.

Matches continue tomorrow on the clay in Florida while the rest of the Irish squad gets ready to start play at the UT Invitational. Results can be found here at UND.com or Twitter or Facebook.
