COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team shot a 31-over par 319 in 2010 NCAA Central Regional second round action at the Otter Creek Golf Course (par 72/6,416 yards) on Friday morning. The Irish improved upon their first round total by nine strokes and Friday’s 319 marked the third lowest score of the 12 teams teeing off in the morning session, behind only San Diego State (316) and Mississippi (317).

In round two, the Fighting Irish were led by sophomore Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton) and junior Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), who each carded seven-over par 79s.

Huffer now stands at 10-over par (154) through two rounds of play and is tied for 17th. Playing the back nine first on Friday, Huffer carded a three-over par mark (39) on her first nine of the day and followed by playing the front nine at four-over par (40). She birdied the par-5 14th and added 10 pars but she also had six bogeys and a double. Huffer has now broken 80 in four of her five career NCAA Central Regional rounds of play.

Conway, who started in the No. 2 position for the Irish on Friday, also carded a seven-over par 79 to move to 17-over par for the tournament. Her second round included 12 pars, 5 bogeys and a double. She closed out her round with a string of five consecutive pars. She is currently tied for 65th.

Sophomore Katie Allare (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) fired Notre Dame’s third best round of the day, which was an eight-over par 80. Allare’s 80 was a six stroke improvement upon her first round total and she is now 22-over par after two rounds of play. Allare’s second round included birdies on the eighth and 14th holes, seven pars, eight bogeys and a double. Starting in both of Notre Dame’s post season tournaments, Allare has now seen four of her five rounds counted towards Notre Dame’s team score.

Senior Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) turned in a nine-over par 81 to round out the scoring for the Irish. A day after not recording a birdie, Brophy led the team with four birdies on Friday. But the team co-captain was hurt by two doubles and a triple. She also added five pars and six bogeys. Brophy played her final nine holes of the day at three-over par (39).

Senior Julie Kim (Bayside, N.Y./Bayside) took four strokes off of her first round total to card a second round 83. Her day was highlighted by a birdie on the par-4 second (her 11th hole of the day). She also netted eight pars, a double and a triple.

Through two rounds of play at the Central Regional, USC leads the Central Regional field at 25-over par. Arizona State is second with an 33-over par total. USC’s Lizette Salas sits atop the individual leader board with an even-par mark (144). Oklahoma State’s Victoria Park is two strokes behind Salas in second place. The eight lowest scoring teams at the Central Regional, as well as the two lowest scoring individuals on non-advancing teams will qualify for the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship. The championship will be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.

Play at the Central Regional concludes tomorrow, May 8, with the Irish tee times slated to run between 1:25 and 2:09 p.m. (ET). Live results for round three can be followed on www.golfstat.com, while a complete recap of Notre Dame’s third round performance will be posted on und.com.
