NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Aleisha Cramer-Rose converted a penalty kick with 10 minutes left to play, as visiting Brigham Young won a 3-2, back-and-forth game versus #23 Notre Dame in emotion-packed action Saturday night at Alumni Field.
Notre Dame (9-7-0) claimed the early lead on a rebound goal by sophomore defender Candace Chapman but BYU (10-5-0) answered with a pair of goals by junior forward Jennifer Fielding-Henry. The Irish then tied the game early in the second half, on a 25-yard shot by freshman forward Katie Thorlakson, but Cramer’s goal allowed the Cougars to push their winning streak to seven games.
The physical game yielded 34 fouls (19 called vs. the Irish) and three yellow cards (all vs. ND), with a rare late-minute penalty kick ultimately deciding the game. BYU crossed the ball into the box and several players collided in the air, with the All-American Cramer-Rose depositing the PK into the lower left corner for her fifth goal of the season (79:29).
Notre Dame junior forward Amanda Guertin again delivered an assist on a set play, on a 25-yard free kick that clanged off the left post. Chapman found the ball in a crowd and pushed in a six-yard shot for her third goal of the season (6:28).
Henry-Fielding then ran onto a pass from senior Jeni Viernes and converted on a skilled shot from 18 yards, sending a rising half-volley shot into the far left corner of the net (12:20).
A fluke play then set up the second BYU goal, when Irish freshman ‘keeper Erika Bohn knocked away a rightside corner kick. But the ball knocked off the referee and the Cougars maintained possession, with Charlene Lui sending a shot on goal from the top of the box. Bohn dove to her left for the save but Annie Hoecerl collected the deflection and cut a pass back into the box from the right endline, with Fielding-Henry converting the chance from close range for her fifth goal of the season (30:54).
Thorlakson – who also scored to tie last week’s 3-1 win over UConn – tied the game in the 53rd minute, moving to her right before lofting a 25-yard shot that slipped through the hands of sophomore ‘keeper Amanda Gott as she jumped for the high shot (52:34).
