Irish Men Sweep Competition In Individuals At Midwest Fencing Championships

Notre Dame, Ind.–The Notre Dame men’s fencing team continued its domination at Sunday’s 2001 Midwest Fencing Conference Individual Championships, winning the finals of epee, foil, and sabre. Each final consisted of two Irish teammates battling for the championship. The Notre Dame women placed individuals in two finals.

The final of the epee competition saw second-seeded junior Brian Casas upset his sophomore teammate, top-seeded Jan Viviani in an intense 15-14 bout.

The sabre final also had its share of upsets. Junior Andre Crompton, the fourth seed, defeated top-seeded Jakub Krochmalski from Wayne State in the semifinals, and defeated his second-seeded teammate senior Andrzej Bednarski in the final by a score of 15-7.

The men’s foil final saw Irish teammates, sophomores Ozren Debic and Forrest Walton, fight to a 15-8 decision, with Debic prevailing.

The women’s epee semifinal saw Anna Carnick defeat teammate and fellow sophomore Meagan Call by a score of 15-11. Carnick fell 15-14 in the final to Alexandra Shklar of Ohio State.

In the women’s sabre semifinals, Irish freshman Destanie Milo and senior Carianne McCullough were defeated by Carly Bells of Northwestern and Sara Bowen of Ohio State respectively, both scores of 15-13. Bowen went on to win in the finals 15-8.

The women’s foil final consisted of Notre Dame sophomore Liza Boutsikaris and Wayne State’s Inga Wallrabenstein, with Boutsikaris falling by a score of 15-8.

The Notre Dame fencing team travels to Detroit, Mich., on March 10th for the Midwest Regional Championship, before travelling March 22-25 to the NCAA championship in Kenosha, Wis.
