BATON ROUGE, La. – The women’s golf team shot a plus-13 301 in the rain-soaked second round of the 2009 Louisiana State University Golf Classic, placing the Irish in a three-way tie for tenth along with South Carolina and Colorado. Freshman Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton HS) and junior Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) led the Irish in round two as each carded plus-two 74’s at the 6,424-yard LSU golf club.
After two rounds of play, Huffer finds herself in an eight-player tie for 15th place on the individual leader board with a plus-two total (72-74-146). For the second straight day, Huffer notched five birdies. She also recorded a minus-two mark on par fives, giving her a minus-five mark on the eight par fives played at the tournament thus far.
Brophy took two shots off of her first round score to card a 74 on day two, placing her at plus-six and in a tie for 47th (76-74-150). She notched birdies on the 11th and 14th holes while also recording 12 pars.
Sophomore All-American So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) turned in a second round 75 to give her a plus-five mark (74-75-149) for the tournament. Her second round included birdies on the first, 15th and 16th holes and also moved her into a tie for 35th.
Senior captain Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute) and sophomore Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) each carded plus-six 78 marks on the day. Maunu, who notched a birdie on the first, is at plus-eight (74-78-152). Conway, who took two strokes off of her first round score, stands at plus-14 (80-78-158) through two rounds of play. Her second round included birdies at the first, seventh and eleventh holes.
Virginia’s Calle Nielsen leads the field with a minus-six mark, while the third-ranked Cavaliers are also in first place with a minus-four mark. With a plus-four mark, Wake Forest is in second and Arkansas rounds out the top three with a plus six mark.
The Irish will look to chase down the frontrunners when the third and final round gets underway tomorrow, March 15. Play will begin with an 8:30 a.m. (CDT) shotgun start.
