NOTRE DAME, Ind. – A crucial battle in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Atlantic Division is set to take place this weekend in Brighton, Massachusetts. The University of Notre Dame softball team and Boston College square off with second place in the division on the line at the Harrington Athletics Village at Brighton Fields. There will unfortunately be no video coverage of the ACC weekend set.
Notre Dame (28-16, 11-6 ACC) enters the weekend in possession of sole second in the ACC Atlantic Division, with Boston College (23-17, 9-5 ACC) the closest challenger to that spot. The Irish will make their first voyage to the new softball complex in Brighton, which officially opened to host the Eagles on April 10.
Strikeout Cancer Success
Notre Dame capped its annual Strikeout Cancer weekend with a 9-5 win in last Saturday’s nightcap of a twin bill against Duke, closing a weekend which saw the program raise over $46,000 to directly benefit pediatric cancer patients in the state of Indiana. The total amount raised over the eight years of the initiative has climbed to nearly $300,000 in funds for children and families stricken by cancer.
Marino And Rochford Heating Up
Both Katie Marino and Melissa Rochford have caught fire for the Notre Dame offense in the past week, guiding the Irish lineup over the last five games. Marino is batting a team-high .438 with seven hits in that span, while Rochford has contributed a .429 clip with six hits, a team-high four RBI and has reached base at a stellar .529 clip.
Brooks Controlling The Circle For The Irish
Over her last three pitching appearances for Notre Dame, Cait Brooks has been lights out from the Irish bullpen. The junior right-hander is 1-0 with a spotless ERA in her past eight innings pitched, surrendering only five hits and a lone earned run. Brooks has walked two batters and struck out six in that span, with opponents batting a mere .172 against her.
The Road Has Been Kind To The Irish In 2018
Notre Dame heads back on the road for the final regular-season road swing of the 2018 campaign with a multitude of success already achieved on the home field of the opposition thus far this season. The Irish are 9-3 in official road games prior to the Boston College series, outscoring opponents by a combined 56-28 on their home turf. Included in that total is a 6-2 mark in ACC play.
The Irish added a 12-6 mark in neutral site games earlier this season to run their overall record to 21-9 in games played away from Melissa Cook Stadium.
Irish Against The Opposition
Notre Dame owns a 28-7 edge in the all-time series with Boston College, a series that has spanned both the BIG EAST Conference and ACC since 1996. The Irish have won 11 of the last 12 meetings between the teams since 2013, and are a combined 11-2 when playing on the home field of the Eagles. This weekend marks Notre Dame’s first trip to the brand-new Boston College softball setup in Brighton.
