Chicago, Ill. and West Lafayette, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team has had a successful weekend thus far with half of their squad at the Illinois Invitational in Chicago, Ill. and the other half at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. The two crews totaled 20 wins on Friday, Sept. 17.
Head coach Bobby Bayliss and the players at the Illinois Invitational claimed 10 wins on the day. Newcomers Greg Andrews (Gull Lake HS/Richland, Mich.) and Billy Pecor (Chaparral, Scottsdale, Ariz.) had an impressive collegiate debut each earning two wins at the Illinois Invitational. Stephen Havens (Hill Christian, Cincinnati, Ohio) claimed a singles victory over University of Alabama’s Jarryd Botha, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2.
The Purdue Invitational was just as successful for the Irish, also totaling 10 wins. Sophomore Spencer Talmadge (Junipero Serra HS, Hillsborough, Calif) and junior Niall Fitzgerald (Blackrock College, Wicklow, Ireland) won back-to-back doubles matches, defeating Dayton’s Robert Salcedo and Andrew Hanley, 8-5.
David Anderson (Sandwich HS, Sandwich, Mass), Talmadge, Michael Moore (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.), Sean Tan (Lakewood HS, Lakewood, Calif.), Ryan Bandy (St. Xavier, Cincinnati, Ohio) and Bryan Kelly (Mounds Park Academy, North Oaks, Minn.) all finished the day with a singles victory.
Both Irish teams will continue play Saturday, Sept. 18. Singles matches will begin at 9:00 a.m (CDT) at Olympia Field Country Club. There will be a full day of tennis at the Schwart Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Ind. Results and a recap of Notre Dame’s performance will be posted to und.com.
