Irish Open ITA Kickoff Weekend with Win

ATHENS, Ga. —  Notre Dame Women’s Tennis opened their first road competition of the spring with a 4-2 victory over Furman in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Hosted by the University of Georgia, the Irish earned a place in Sunday’s championship match against the winner of Saturday’s Georgia-Michigan State contest.

How It Happened

Ally Bojczuk and Bess Waldram earned a 6-1 Irish victory in doubles play, but it fell just short, as the Irish lost the doubles point to the Paladins. 

In singles play, Cameron Corse earned the first point for the Irish behind a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory over Julia Adams. Ally Bojczuk followed quickly after with a 6-2, 6-4 win over MaryAnn Rompf.

Page Freeman quickly jumped out to a 4-1 lead on Furman’s Georgie Walker in the first set. The freshman won her first set, 6-2, and then earned the point for the Irish following her 6-4 win in the second.

Junior Julia Lilien led 4-3 in her first singles set before earning the first-set victory, 6-3. Lilien dropped the second set, 3-6, before rebounding to earn the 6-4 victory and win the point. Zoe Taylor battled back from down 5-4 in the second set to force a tiebreaker. Taylor ultimately won the 7-6 tiebreaker, 7-4.

The Irish will close out the ITA Kickoff Weekend in the championship match against the winner of Saturday’s Georgia-Michigan State matchup. The championship will take place Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. ET. Live scoring and streaming of the match can be found here.
