Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team opened the 2004 season with an impressive 17-9 win over Team Canada at the Loftus Center Saturday afternoon.
The Irish got goals from 10 different players led by Lauren Fischer (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Meghan Murphy (Fr., Centennial, Colo.) with three each. Fischer paced the Irish with five points (3g, 2a) in the game while fellow senior Meredith Simon (Flemington, N.J.) had two goals and two assists on the afternoon.
Senior Kassen Delano (Alexandria, Va.) and junior Jackie Bowers (Springfield, Pa.) joined Murphy with three points in the game. Delano had two goals and and assist while Bowers had a goal and two assists. Kristen Gaudreau (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) added two goals for the Irish while Crysti Foote (So., Suffern, N.Y.), Abby Owen (Sr., Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), Andrea Kinnik (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) and Brittany Fox (Annapolis, Md.) had single goals for the Irish.
Jen Johnson and Jess Brownridge led Team Canada with three goals each.
The Irish led 12-4 at the half and the teams each scored five times in the second half for the final of 17-9. In goal, junior Carol Dixon (Pennsauken, N.J.) played the first 50 minutes, giving up eight goals while making five saves. Freshman Katie Linhares (Greenwich, Conn.) played the final 10 minutes, giving up one goal while making three saves.
The Irish will next play on Saturday, February 21 when they travel to Princeton, N.J. to participate in the Princeton Invitational in the final preseason tuneup. Notre Dame opens the regular season on Friday, February 27 when they travel to the University of California.
