CHICAGO, Ill. – The Irish men’s tennis team played in ten singles matches and 10 doubles matches on day one of the Illinois/Olympia Fields Invitational on Friday, September 18. Junior captain Tyler Davis (Nashville, TN/Father Ryan H.S.) led the way with both a singles and doubles win for the Irish.
Davis earned his singles win over Tobias Reitz of Northwestern, 6-3, 6-1. Junior Daniel Stahl (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman H.S.) and freshman Blas Moros (Boca Raton, FL/Pine Crest School) also earned wins in singles play for the Irish. Stahl downed Illinois’ 24th-ranked Dennis Nevolo in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (6), while Moros defeated Clint Bowles of Florid State, 7-6 (3), 6-4, to earn his first career win with Notre Dame.
The Irish staff of head coach Bobby Bayliss and associate head coach Ryan Sachire put together five teams which each played two doubles matches on Friday. The teams included Davis and sophomore Casey Watt (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland), junior Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, OH/Hill Christian School) and Stahl, freshman Spencer Talmadge (Hillsborough, CA/Junipero Serra) and junior Matt Johnson (Portage, MI/Portage Central H.S.), junior David Anderson (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich H.S.) and Moros as well as senior Takashi Yoshii (Tokyo, Japan/The American School in Japan) and freshman Michael Moore ((Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South).
Davis and Watt claimed Notre Dame’s lone doubles win in a closely contested match versus Christian Blocker and Carl Sundberg of Miami, 9-8 (3).
The Olympia Fields Invitational will continue tomorrow, Sept. 19.
