MADISON, Wis. (9/18/99) – The Notre Dame women’s golf team slipped to ninth place in second-round action Saturday at the three-round Lady Northern Invitational, which is being held at the University Ridge Golf Course.
The injury-depleted Irish head into Sunday’s final round just six strokes behind Michigan State while holding a two-shot edge on Iowa in the 16-team event. MSU shot 314 on Saturday to leap past Notre Dame, which shot 324 after opening with a 320 on Friday.
Junior Shane Smith vaulted into a share of 19th place in the 96th-place, after posting the best round of her two-year Notre Dame career (75) for a 155 total-just three shots out of the top 10. Sophomore Kristin McMurtrie (80-81) stands tied for 81st while senior Beth Cooper slipped to a share of 59th after a second-round 87 (she shot a team-best 79 on Friday.
Freshman Priscilla Ro again counted to the Irish score in the play-six, count-four format, with a round of 86 for a 167 total. Ro and Irish junior Danielle Villarosa (85-82) are tied for 63rd, with junior Becca Schloss (89-87) rounding out the Irish contingent.
Notre Dame senior captain Andrea Klee remains out indefinitely with a forearm injury suffered during the summer of ’99 while junior Mary Klein was a late scratch from the tournament due to a sore neck problem. Klein (82.73) and Klee (82.86) paced the Irish during the 1998-99 season with near-identical season stroke averages.
