GEORGETOWN, D.C. – The Notre Dame softball team picked up another BIG EAST Conference win Friday at Guy Mason Field with an 8-2 victory over Georgetown. Heather Johnson went 3-for-4 with an RBI as four other Irish players finished with two hits. Katie Fleury and Alexia Clay each scored two runs.
Jody Valdivia (16-5) got the win after giving up two hits and two earned runs with 11 strikeouts. The loss went to Mackensey Carter who went 3.1 innings and gave up three earned runs on seven hits.
The first Notre Dame (37-14 overall, 18-3 BIG EAST) batter of game two, Fleury, belted a solo home run to get the Irish on the board.
Linda Kohan went yard one inning later to double-up the count on the Hoyas. Fleury singled in her next at-bat to plate Clay as the Irish would go on to run the count to 5-0. Georgetown’s (5-30, 6-14) Demetria Cipriano was charged with a throwing error from third base that allowed Alexa Maldonado to score an unearned run, and Fleury found her way across the plate on Johnson’s single to shallow center.
Back-to-back singles in the fourth by Beth Northway and Johnson helped produce a score on Dani Miller’s single down the left field chalk. Samantha Peters got Georgetown on the scoreboard in the bottom half with a solo jack to left.
Brianna Jorgensborg singled to start a two-run rally in the fifth. Clay tripled Jorgensborg home and Maldonado drove a sacrifice fly to score Clay.
The game was resumed after being halted on March 28. Kelsie Hanson was at the plate for Georgetown with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Notre Dame was leading, 8-1, when Valdivia struck out the next two batters.
Notre Dame’s 14th hit of the game came in the sixth on a Lux single through the right side.
McKinley Cooper hit home solo home run to left in the bottom of the seventh for Georgetown.
