AUSTIN, Texas – The Fighting Irish women’s golf team remains in 10th place following the second round of competition at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas. Senior Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) and junior So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton (Fla.)/Preparatory Academy), who each fired second round 78’s (+6), continue to pace the Irish individually with a two-day 152 (+8) total.
Brophy jumped out to a quick start, birdying each of the first two holes and finished the opening nine holes with an even-par 36. She struggled on the closing nine, however, after registering three bogeys and two double bogeys to close her round with a six-over par 42 on the front.
Park, much like Brophy, opened with a strong starting nine after also booking an even-par 36. She sat at two over after the first five holes but used two birdies on the next four to get back to even par. She fell to two-over par after 15 holes before finishing her final three-hole stretch at four-over par and finishing up her second round at 78. Both Park and Brophy find themselves in a tie for 30th after the first two days of action.
Sophomore Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton) registered her second straight five-over par 77 during her second 18 holes. She secured ten pars on the round and also posted two birdies coming on back-to-back holes at the 14th and 15th. She currently sits in a tie for 38th place with a two-day ten-over par 154.
Senior Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head (S.C.) Prep School), who opened the tournament with an 83, shaved six strokes off in her second round effort by posting a five-over par 77. The five-over par score tied Huffer for the best mark posted by an Irish golfer on the day. She recorded 11 pars on the round and notched a birdie on hole one, a hole that she doubled bogeyed on day one. Wetzel is now placed in a tie for 76th after the first two rounds with a two-day total of 160 (+16).
Junior Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) struggled during round two, carding a ten-over par 82. She posted 10 pars during the round, but was plagued by five bogeys and two double bogeys, both coming on her opening four holes. Her two-day total of 160 (+16) places Conway into a tie with Wetzel for 76th entering the final day of competition.
UCLA remains in the lead of the 17-team field following day two of competition after finishing with a two-over par, 290, good for a two-day total of 585 (+9). Sarah Zwartynski of Texas A&M is tied with Stephanie Kono of UCLA in the individual field, both sitting at two-under par after 36 holes with a 142.
Final round action will be a shotgun start format with tee times beginning at 8:45 a.m. (CT).
