Irish Roll in Victory at Arkansas

The University of Notre Dame football team (2-2) scored touchdowns in all six first-half drives as the Irish won in dominating fashion 56-13 at Arkansas (2-3) in the first ever meeting between the two programs.

Jeremiyah Love scored two rushing and two receiving touchdowns in the first half, becoming the first Notre Dame player in the last 30 years to find the endzone four times in a single half. Freshman quarterback CJ Carr threw for a career-high 354 yards and four touchdowns as Notre Dame scored 42 points and recorded 420 yards of total offense in the first half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Arkansas won the toss and elected to receive first. On the third play of the game, the Razorbacks completed a 33-yard pass over the middle to the Notre Dame 28-yard line to set themselves up in field goal range. Arkansas struck first with a 39-yard field goal to take an early 3-0 lead.

On the first offensive series for Notre Dame, CJ Carr tossed two completions of 20 or more yards, first finding Malachi Fields over the middle for 21 before hooking up with Jeremiyah Love for 25 yards on a corner route that put the Irish in enemy territory early. Love capped off the opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to put Notre Dame on top 7-3.

After the defense forced an Arkansas three-and-out, the Irish drove right down the field again. A 22-yard pass from Carr to Will Pauling followed by a 20-yard rush from Jadarian Price made it first and goal for Notre Dame. Two plays later, Carr found Love in the flat, who caught the ball, spun out of a tackle and trotted into the endzone for his second touchdown in as many drives.

Notre Dame made it a third-straight touchdown drive as Carr found Will Pauling over the middle for a 23-yard touchdown strike to make it 21-10. It was the first touchdown in an Irish uniform for Pauling.

The Irish offensive attack wasn’t done yet. After the Notre Dame defense forced another Razorback punt, Love scored his third touchdown in the half, catching a 34-yard screen pass and dashing into the endzone untouched behind a wall of offensive lineman

That wouldn’t be the last time Love found the endzone in the first half. After an Arkansas field goal, Notre Dame put together a 12-play, 75-yard drive, completed by a three-yard rushing touchdown for Love. The junior running back became the first Notre Dame player in the last 30 years to have two rushing and two receiving touchdowns in the first half.

After kicking the ball off to Arkansas, Adon Shuler made his presence felt, forcing a fumble on the first play of the Razorbacks drive that was recovered by Devonta Smith, giving the potent Irish offense another chance to score before half. And so they did. After a first down throw to Jordan Faison, Carr found Price, who made a couple of moves and scampered in for a 34-yard touchdown catch for the sixth Irish touchdown of the first half. Notre Dame’s lead was 42-13 going into the locker room.

Facing fourth down on the opening drive of the second half, Notre Dame faked the punt, as Faison found Fields wide open streaking across the middle for 40-yards, setting up a first down in Razorback territory. The Irish scored minutes later as Price found paydirt from 16-yards out for his first rushing touchdown of the day to increase the Notre Dame lead to 36. The Irish led 49-13 at the end of the third quarter.

Notre Dame started to substitute more extensively in the fourth quarter. Matt Jeffrey hauled in his first career reception, a 37-yard strike from Kenny Minchey for a first down. Aneyas Williams would go on to score his first touchdown of the season, bouncing off a defender and strolling into the endzone from 17-yards out for the fourth rushing touchdown of the game for Notre Dame.

On Arkansas’ next drive, Luke Talich recorded his first interception of the season, high pointing the ball in the endzone to give the Irish the ball back, where they ran out the clock to secure the 56-13 win.
