NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The second day of fall competition is has come to an end for the University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team, with the young group of Irish posting welcome results at the Napa Valley Classic and at Harvard’s Chowder Fest.
NAPA VALLEY CLASSIC
Freshman Tristan McCormick improved to 2-0 on the season with a singles win over a USTA opponent in Napa Valley, prevailing in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Junior Alex Lebedev also picked up a win against USTA competition on Saturday, winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Lebedev and sophomore Matt Gamble also posted two doubles victories, defeating Alexander Bakshi and Jochen Bertsch of Oklahoma, 6-1, and Bjorn Hoffman and Jack Molloy of California, 7-6(5).
Play at Napa continues tomorrow with the conclusion of group play. The winners of each group will advance to a wild card shootout to determine the winner of a wild card entry to an upcoming USTA tournament.
CHOWDER FEST
Sophomore Johnathan Small snared his second victory of the season in Cambridge, Massachusetts, downing Buffalo’s Villhelm Friddel in three sets. Freshman William Howells and senior Drew Dawson also picked up singles wins Saturday.
In doubles, William Howells and Brendon Kempin upended Buffalo’s Ethan Nittolo and Hao Sheng Koay 6-4.
Play will continue Sunday when Notre Dame wraps up play against Harvard.

Joanne Norell, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2014 and coordinates communications efforts for the Notre Dame men’s tennis, women’s tennis and fencing programs, in addition to overseeing production of the football Gameday Magazine. Norell is a 2011 graduate of Purdue University and earned her master’s degree from Georgetown University in 2013.
