Palo Alto, Calif. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team made it two in a row in California on Sunday afternoon as the Irish defeated 14th-ranked Stanford, 16-5 at Maloney Field.
Meredith Simon and Abby Owen led the Irish with four goals each in the game. Simon added a pair of assists for the third game of her career with six or more points and the four goals equaled a career high. Owen’s four goals were a career-high and equaled a career-best with four points in the game.
The win gives Notre Dame a 2-0 record to start the season while Stanford falls to 3-2 on the year. The Irish win avenges last season’s heart-breaking 14-13 double-overtime loss to the Cardinal at Moose Krause Stadium.
Notre Dame wasted little time in putting this one away early as the Irish ran off six unanswered goals in the first 17:17 of the game. Owen scored twice in the early run while Simon, Meghan Murphy, Crysti Foote and Lauren Fischer scored solo goals for the Irish.
Nina Pantano broke Notre Dame’s run with a goal at the 8:46 mark of the first half to make it 6-1. Andrea Kinnik answered back for the Irish 1:11 later as she went the length of the field on a solo rush and beat Stanford goaltender Christina Saikus at 7:35.
Michelle DeChant and Megan Burker would cut the Irish lead to 7-3 before Mary McGrath closed the first-half scoring with 5:06 left in the half for an 8-3 lead.
The Cardinal would cut the lead to four goals when Abbi Hills scored just 35 seconds into the second half, but the Irish ran off six straight goals to build the lead to 14-4.
Simon had three goals in the run, Owen two and Fischer added her second of the night to build the 10-goal lead.
Burker got her second of the game for Stanford and Kristen Gaudreau scored twice for Notre Dame to close the scoring in the 16-5 win.
For the afternoon, Notre Dame outshot Stanford, 28-17, in the game. Carol Dixon made nine saves for the Irish to record her second win of the season. Saikus played 45 minutes and made four saves in taking the loss. Kate Horowitz played the final 15 minutes, giving up six goals while making two saves.
Notre Dame returns to action on Sunday, March 7 when the Irish play host to 15th-ranked Cornell. That game will be played at the Loftus Sports Center with the opening draw set for 12:00 noon.
