Irish Set to Host Eighth-Ranked Georgetown

April 8, 1999

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The 14th-ranked Notre Dame men lacrosse team will look to rebound from its 10-9 overtime loss at Hofstra last Saturday as the Irish entertain eighth-ranked Georgetown on Saturday, April 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Moose Krause Stadium.

Notre Dame will face its third consecutive ranked opponent (and fifth of the season) when the Hoyas pay a visit this weekend. Coach Kevin Corrigan’s squad will be looking to extend its home win streak as the Irish are a spotless 4-0 at home this season and have won five straight at the friendly confines of Moose Krause Stadium dating back to last season.

The Irish, 5-3 overall and 3-0 in the Great Western Lacrosse League, had won three straight and five of their last six before their loss to the Flying Dutchmen.

Notre Dame dropped one spot from 13th to 14th in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Poll. Last week’s ranking was the highest of the season for the Irish.

LAST WEEK IN REVIEW — Hofstra: Notre Dame battled back from a third quarter four-goal deficit, but had its rally fall short as the Irish lost a 10-9 overtime decision at Hofstra. Heading into the contest, Notre Dame had won four straight over the Flying Dutchmen. David Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.) and Chris Dusseau (Columbus, Ohio) each scored three goals in the contest, while Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.) added two scores and Revere LaNoue (Baltimore, Md.) tallied the other Irish score. In addition to his two goals, Glatzel dished off three assists. David and Todd Ulrich also had an assist each in the game.

Notre Dame fell behind 4-0 with 4:09 remaining in the first quarter, but Glatzel scored the first of three unanswered goals for the Irish with 41 seconds left in the first 15-minute stanza. David Ulrich had back-to-back goals in the second quarter to pull the Irish to within a goal, but Hofstra responded with two goals in the final 5:43 of the first half and headed into the intermission with a 6-3 halftime lead.

The two teams traded scores early in the third quarter as Hoftra built an 8-4 lead with 11:36 remaining in the third quarter. The four-goal deficit was erased to one when Dusseau, David Ulrich and LaNoue scored to pull the Irish to within 8-7 heading into the final quarter.

Hofstra went up 9-7 with 5:38 remaining, but Dusseau tallied Notre Dame’s final two goals to tie the score with 3:49 remaining. Chad Eisenhart scored 2:11 into sudden death overtime to lift the Flying Dutchmen to the win.

Kirk Howell (Brentwood, Tenn.) finished with 12 saves in the contest, marking the fourth consecutive game (and fifth time this season) that he recorded 10-plus saves in a contest.

HEAD COACH KEVIN CORRIGAN — Kevin Corrigan is in his 11th season at the Notre Dame helm and his 13th in the collegiate ranks. The three-time Great Western Lacrosse League coach of the year earned his 100th career win in Notre Dame’s 10-8 victory over Hobart on March 27. He owns a 101-67 (.601) overall ledger and an 91-52 (.636) mark with the Irish. Corrigan has guided Notre Dame to seven NCAA tournament appearances and conference titles. Prior to 1998, he had led the Irish to six straight tournament berths from 1992-97. Under Corrigan in 1995, Notre Dame won its first-ever NCAA tournament which propelled the Irish into the quarterfinals for the first time in school history. Previous to his tenure at Notre Dame, he served as head coach at Randolph-Macon during the 1985 and 1986 campaign where his teams compiled a 10-15 mark.

SERIES RECORD VS. GEORGETOWN — The two teams meet for the second consecutive year and for the eighth time since the series was started in 1982. The Hoyas hold a 4-3 advantage in the seven previous outings, including last year’s 13-7 victory. Notre Dame has dropped the last two meetings against Georgetown. It’s last win was at home in 1993 as the Irish earned a 13-10 victory.

BROTHERLY LOVE — It will be a family reunion for the Dusseau family on Saturday when Chris goes up against his brother Steve, a freshman midfielder on the Georgetown squad. He has played in four of the team’s seven games and has scored a goal and disshed off three assists.

DUSSEAU APPROACHES 100 GOALS — Chris Dusseau, who ranks third all-time on the Notre Dame career goals scoring list, needs just one more goal to reach the 100-goal mark for his career. Dusseau, who has 99 and has led the Irish in goals scored in each of his three previous campaigns heading into this season, would become just the third player in the history of the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse program to score 100 goals. The other two players to reach the milestone were Randy Colley (173 goals from 1992-94) and Joe Franklin (113 goals from 1983-86).

TABLES TURNED — Notre Dame suffered seven losses during the 1998 campaign. Five of those teams the Irish lost to a year ago are on the schedule this season. Corrigan’s squad has already played against three of those teams and has posted a 2-1 record against those opponents. Notre Dame’s last two wins against Hobart and Butler avenged the losses from last year.

DUSSEAU REACHES THE CENTURY MARK — Notre Dame senior attack Chris Dusseau became the 12th Irish player to reach the 100-point mark in his career this season. Currently third in the scoring column this season with 17 goals and two assists (19 points), Dusseau stands 12th on the all-time Irish scoring list with 99 goals and 11 assists for 110 points. He need just two points to pass Brian McHugh (1987-90) who is 11th on the all-time scoring list with 111 points. Dusseau, a co-captain this season, has started all 45 games throughout his career.

OVERTIME STREAK SNAPPED — Before its loss to Hofstra on Saturday, Notre Dame had won seven straight overtime contests dating back to the 1988 campaign. Since 1981, the Irish have played 12 overtime games and have an 8-4 record.

SUPER SOPHS — Notre Dame’s sophomore class is represented well in the Irish scoring column this season as four of the team’s five scorers are second-year players. David Ulrich leads the team in scoring with 12 goals and a team-high 23 assists (35 points), while teammate Tom Glatzel leads the team 17 goals and eight assists (25 points). David’s twin brother, Todd, is fourth in scoring with nine goals and eight assists (17 points), while Steve Bishko rounds out the top five scorers with 10 goals and four assists (14 points).

HOWELL TOUGH IN GOAL — Junior Kirk Howell, who spent two seasons as the backup to four-year starter Alex Cade, has been impressive in Notre Dame’s eight games this season. He registered a career-high 17 saves in Notre Dame’s 10-8 loss to Loyola on March 20, and has had 10 or more saves in the team’s last four contests as well as five games overall. Howell made 12 saves against Hofstra on Saturday, 14 against Hobart on March 27, 13 against Butler on March 30, and 15 in the season-opening loss at Penn State on February 28. Howell has played 466:16 of the possible 482:11. He has allowed 66 goals and made 92 saves for a .584 save percentage and 8.49 goals against average.

TOUGH DEFENSE — Notre Dame’s defense has given up 69 goals (8.63 goals per game) in eight contests. The Irish have been most effective in the fourth quarter as opponents are averaging just 1.63 in the final 15-minute stanza, having allowed just 13 goals in that period. Notre Dame has held two teams — Air Force and Butler — scoreless in the fourth quarter this season.

IRISH STRONG AT HOME — In three (1994, 1995 and 1997) of the last five years, Notre Dame finished the home portion of its season undefeated. The Irish posted 5-0 marks in both ’94 and ’95 and were 6-0 in ’97. The ’99 schedule features seven home games and five road contests. Corrigan’s squad is 4-0 at home already this season. Since 1984, Notre Dame has a 78-24 (.765) record at home and is 38-7 (.844) over the last seven-plus seasons.
