DES MOINES, Iowa — The University of Notre Dame’s men’s and women’s track & field teams got off to strong starts on Friday at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Fighting Irish women got a pair of winning performances and four overall top-five finishes. Jade Barber won the preliminary running of the 100-meter hurdles to advance to Saturday’s finals in a time of 13.39, while the 4×200-meter relay team of Kaila Barber, Jade Barber, Parker English and Margaret Bamgbose won snared the crown in 1:34.08. In the preliminary of the 4×400-meter relay, English, Amber Lalla, Jordan Shead and Bamgbose finished third (3:34.05) to advance to the finals, and both Barbers, English, and Bamgbose also advanced in the 4×100-meter relay preliminaries, winning their heat and taking fourth overall (45.05).

For the men, Eric Ways, Harvey Smith, Alex Groesch and Chris Giesting took fourth place in the finals of the 4×200-meter relay (1:24.08), while the same group qualified for the final of the 4×400-meter relay with an eighth-place finish in the prelims (3:08.42).

Action resumes at 9 a.m. EDT Saturday as the Irish women will compete in the sprint medley relay and the men will be represented by Anthony Shivers and Dominick Padovano in both the discus and the hammer throw.

HILLSDALE, Mich. — A pair of Irish throwers and a jumper earned top five finishes on Friday at the 49th Annual GINA Relays at the Ken Herrick Outdoor Track at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan.

The Notre Dame men saw two third-place finishes, one from Nicolas Hauser in the hammer throw (55.74m) and the other from Hunter Holton in the high jump (2.01m). For the women, it was Lena Madison with a fourth-place finish in the hammer (50.80m)
