Piscataway, N.J. – The No. 7 Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team remained undefeated as the Irish registered an impressive 9-4 road win handing No. 18 Rutgers (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season. Tom Glatzel (Baltimore, Md.) tied his career-high with five goals in the game to lead Irish who improved to 3-0 on the season.
Glatzel scored four of his five goals in the first half as Notre Dame led 6-0 at the break. David Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.) got the Irish on the scoreboard first less than five minutes into the contest as he scored an unassisted goal with 10:26 remaining in the first quarter. Glatzel then tallied back-to-back scores before Steve Bishko (West Islip, N.Y.) scored the final goal of the quarter with 20 seconds left as Notre Dame led 4-0 after one period. It was the first of two goals in the game Bishko.
Glatzel scored both goals of the second quarter with his scores coming at the 8:43 and 3:22 marks of the contest.
Jason Brown got the Scarlet Knights on the scoreboard 1:21 into the third quarter, but then consecutive goals by Glatzel and Bishko pushed the Irish lead to 8-01. Mike McLaughlin tallied Rutgers second score of the game with 2,46 remaining in the third-period stanza before Chris Young’s (Manlius, N.Y.) score off an assist by Ulrich as that scored ended the Irish scoring for the afternoon.
Senior goalie Kirk Howell (Nashville, Tenn.) had four saves in the game as he and the Irish defense held an opponent to under 10 goals for the third time this season.
Notre Dame returns to action on Wed., Mar. 14 when the Irish travel to Charlottesville, Va., to face perennial power Virginia in the second contest of a three-game road swing. Face-off is at 4:00 p.m.
