EAST LANSING, Mich. – Day 2 of the ITA Regionals saw the beginning of main draw action in both the singles and doubles events. Doubles was on deck first and the Notre Dame men’s team had a strong showing, going 5-1 overall and seeing three teams advance to the Round of 16 tomorrow.
Chase Thompson and Kyran Magimay, who entered the day as the #14 seed in the draw of 64 doubles team, opened play with an 8-3 win over the Marquette duo. Then a matching score in the second round against a pair from the host team Michigan State saw them advance to tomorrow.
The senior pairing of Jamie Corsillo and Yu Zhang won their first match of the day by an 8-5 scoreline against UIC. Then in the second round, they took on the #3 seed in the tournament from Ohio State. The veteran Irish players jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, winning the match 8-4. The Buckeye pair across the net came into the match as the #30 ranked doubles team in the country and is the highest ranked doubles win for each of Corsillo and Zhang in their respective college careers.
Sebastian Dominko and Peter Nad, who are the #4 seed in the tournament and #46 ranked team in the country, received a bye in the opening round by virtue of being a top-seeded team. In the second round, they would take on a very tough Cleveland State team and need a tiebreak to determine the winner with the Notre Dame tandem coming out on top 7-6(3) to join their four teammates in the round fo 16.
Singles was a tougher day for the Irish but highlighted by Dominko’s dominant first round win. The #4 seed in the tournament and #13 overall player in the country took on his opponent from Illinois and raced to a quick 6-1 first set win. Dominko then broke early to go up 3-0 before the opponents would trade holds of serve until the Notre Dame junior clinched the match with a 6-3 second set win.
